NNELL/IN-NELL Conference 2008
Two Networks, One Conference: A Real Bargain!

Save these dates: Jan. 25 and 26, 2008! This year NNELL joins IN-NELL to provide a TWO-DAY learning experience for world language educators! Plan on participating in this joint conference.

On Friday, January 25, Terry Cacavalle, NNELL President, will facilitate a workshop entitled Empowering Students Through Reading in World Languages at Sycamore School. A multitude of strategies for vocabulary expansion, comprehension and techniques that support the importance of reading in world languages will be included in this workshop. Terry is the founder of an immersion program and coordinator of World Language Education in Holliston District Schools, Holliston, Massachusetts. In addition to teaching full time, Terry teaches courses in world language methodology and supervises pre-service teachers. What about the content of the NNELL workshop? Terry will address the following and more

  • Why is reading so important in world language classes?
  • What does the latest research say with regard to reading in world languages?
  • Teaching vocabulary: What works? Different strategies and ideas to help students
learn, expand and retain their word banks.
  • Reading comprehension and student success. What type of reading? How to begin?
    How to build student confidence?
  • What teachers can do to overcome the frequently heard student comment: “I can’t read this! It’s in another language!”
  • A key element in making connections: READING!

Terry always shares her vast knowledge of language acquisition theory and practice with passion and a great sense of humor. A special surprise awaits all participants at Sycamore School. Walking though the halls is a special treat.

On Saturday, January 26, IN-NELL will host its 8th annual conference at Park Tudor School. Our focus Saturday will be on brain research. What does current brain research say about language acquisition? What is happening on a cognitive level when your students are learning a second language? How can we use information about how the young brain grows and develops to make our teaching more brain-compatible? Please join us on Saturday, January 26th at Park Tudor School for a presentation of the latest brain research to answer some of these questions, and perhaps even pose new ones.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Hamilton, is a clinical psychologist and Director of the Russel & Mary Williams Learning Project at Park Tudor School. Scott has done extensive work in interpreting current brain research and applying it to educational settings. We are thrilled to have him share his expertise on this very important topic for world language educators.

After his presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and to discuss the application of research in our classrooms, (If you are interested in inviting a limited number of parents or administrators who support your world language program to attend this part of the conference, please contact Pamela Gemmer valdesp@ips.k12.in.us or Molly Murphy mmurphy@parktudor.org for details.)

Dr. Hamilton’s presentation will set the stage for our afternoon presentations with an emphasis on classroom assessments, student participation and classroom management - a potpourri of ideas that work! Nicci Saari, Patricia Hanna, Amy Malott, Kathy White and Pamela Gemmer are amongst those who will make short feature presentations. Please plan to contribute to the traditional swap shop of ideas and be prepared to win a door prize. Do not miss this opportunity to connect with other colleagues, share ideas, become a part of the link between NNELL and INNELL, and depart refreshed and renewed when you return to the classroom!

COME and discover why IN-NELL is the best kept secret for world language teachers in Indiana!

See you there!
